The Student Representative Council of St Clair college offered a career workshop called How can social media help you advance your career. I feel as though attendance for this event should have been higher. The social media guest speaker was Gail Robertson.

She started off with an introduction to who she is. Gail is a keynote speaker who talks about branding yourself to help increase sales, retain/recruit staff and connect to people you never thought possible! In her talk, she discussed tips and tricks on using social media to help you advance your career. Here are the tips and tricks that she suggested in setting up a LinkedIn profile.

LinkedIn is a professional network of people to connect to. Spending time and being active on this platform can help benefit our professional futures. Gail mentioned that connections are important in our field of public relations communication and connection with others is key. She also discussed that LinkedIn is not just used as a virtual resume you want to show people who you are with the little things such as adding a banner to your linked in profile. Some of the other helpful tips she mentioned and people most commonly add in their About section their cover letter. This section you want to explain who you are and show your personality. She mentioned this point because future employees will already own a copy of your resume and cover letter employees want a sense of one’s personality.

Overall, I learned a lot from Gail about how to market myself to achieve the career and the goal that I want. I encourage all students to take advantage of career training before they leave school so that you can get a better advantage in our future careers.
