Students weigh in on tax increase

Some students see both good and bad if area mayors and councils raise taxes. What the tax money is used for will often determine how people will feel about the increase.
University of Windsor student Jasmine Taylor, 25, said a tax increase is both good and bad for different reasons.
“If the money is being used to aid snow trucks to plow my street I won’t have a problem with that,” said Taylor. “My street is never plowed and it’s hard getting around.”
Living with her 19-year-old sister in LaSalle, Taylor said she would like more tax dollars to be put towards the police department because she feels there are not many police officers roaming the streets.
“I also would like for the money to go to the fire department as well,” said Taylor. “It would just make me feel better as a student basically living on my own that I am safe.”
Taylor’s sister, Jordan Taylor, is also a student and said she would not be happy about a tax increase.
“Being a student athlete and a full-time student, money is very tight for me,” said Jordan.
She said she finds time to work whenever she can which is not very often. Living with her sister, they have to pay property taxes and she does not want to pay more than she already is paying.
“While studying accounting, I see firsthand the effect of how high tax rates are affecting students and other residents,” said Jordan.
Depending on where the tax dollars are going, some people will not mind the increase whereas on the other hand some would rather keep that money in their pocket.
