Subway not student friendly anymore

Some college and university students in Windsor feel that Subway’s new prices are not as affordable as they once were.

Subway, being one of the top grossing fast food restaurants in the world, has always been a choice for students because of their affordable and convenient prices. As of late, that has not been the case. Subway prices have notably been rising over the years, and students have definitely noticed.

“I mean, it’s unfortunate,” said University of Windsor student Ariane Richards. “I feel they should make Subways around the university cheaper than the rest of them or at least get a discount with a student card.”

In February 2014, Subway increased their sandwiches/subs by 25 cents each. All foot long sandwiches at Subway now price from $5.25 to $8 before taxes. If you decide to make your meal a combo by adding a drink with two cookies or a bag of chips, you are looking to pay anywhere from $9.50 and more.

“It’s ridiculous,” said Richards. “They should find some way to make their product cheaper or people might stop eating there. Some franchises add more quality or portion when they raise prices, but Subway’s sub looks the same to me and sometimes it looks worse.”

In terms of the pricing affecting her friends’ choice of Subway, Richards laughed.

“Yes,” she said. “Of course it affected them.”

Subway’s “$5 Footlong” promotion, which was enjoyed by students due to its low pricing and high portion, ended in January 2014. The pricing change was put in affect the following February, but Subway employees at the 2424 University Ave location haven’t seen much of a difference within the last year.

“No difference. It’s been normal,” said Subway employee Tammy Hicks. “People do complain, but they still come back. People might relate the price change to the quality of food they’re getting.”

Subway, as a franchise, still ranks third in the world in global fast food chains. Although the franchise might not see a major difference in their sales or customers, students such as Ariane Richards do feel that Subway sandwiches have become too expensive. A decrease in sandwich pricing might see the franchise become student friendly once again.
