Many people are heading to the Tecumseh Arena for free family game nights.

“It’s really fun. The kids have been playing hockey, they have been doing puzzles, doing Lego, playing chess,” said Heather Pelisek one of the moms who came with her two children on a recent Friday night. “They are having a great time.”

The manager of recreation programs for the Town of Tecumseh Kerri Rice saw the need for such an event.

She said children tend to spend too much looking at screens and not enough time having real-world interactions.

“We received provincial funding through the Healthy Kids (program) to provide an activity that is going in encourage people to reduce screen time, to reduce the time in front of the television or computer screen or their phones,” Rice said.

Rice said she loves doing this so children get a chance to disconnect from virtual reality and connect with real-life games.

“ We are trying to provide people other options on how to be entertained without being in front of the screen.”
