Fans of all ages came out to enjoy one of the largest model train show in Essex County Feb. 14 and 15.

The 20th Annual Heritage Essex Train Show saw model train enthusiasts and hobbyist from as far away as London set up their tracks for the two-day show which was held at Essex District High School.

“Our shows are more than just a model train enthusiast’s paradise,” said Tony Malkowski, president of Heritage Essex Inc. “They are the ideal family outing where you can marvel at these detailed treasures, perhaps find a piece for display on the fireplace mantel or even get excited enough to start getting involved in this wonderful hobby.”

The train show featured more than 50 tables of vendors selling model trains of all scales including train sets, locomotives, transformers, rolling stock, track, structures, photographs, videos and DVDs. The show also featured a model train layout in operation throughout the day.

Local Girl Guides also participated in the fundraising by providing food and drinks to the vendors and the visitors.

Cheryl Skilton is a promotional manager at Essex Railway Station. She said the station is operated by Heritage Essex, which is a registered charity organization devoted to heritage preservation and promotion. The money from the events pays for the upkeep and renovation of the railway station.
“The railway station, which was built in 1887, consists of restored stone, a heritage gardens area with markers identifying individuals and families who have contributed to the development of the Town of Essex and antique railcars from 1909 and 1942,” said Skilton.

Lynn Johnston, who was enjoying the event with her  three children, said  she has been coming to this train show for the past four years. She said her sons Mark 10, James, 8, and Brian, 5 are the biggest fans of trains.
“My kids are just obsessed with trains,” said Johnston. “We go to all the events where trains and engines are involved.”

Heritage Essex hosts several events throughout the year which include the Model Train show in February, Garden Delights and plant sale in May, the Citizen of the Year dinner & auction in October and Crafts at the Station in December.
