The MediaPlex opens its doors for prospective students

The St. Clair College MediaPlex opened its doors for prospective students and their families Nov. 24.
The event showcased St. Clair programs such as journalism, media convergence, public relations and travel and tourism.
Prospective student Tecumseh McGuigan said he will definitely be coming for the journalism program in fall 2013.
“I got to actually see the video editing going on the room,” said McGuigan. “I got to see the control room. I got to see the work in action and I think that just worked a lot better than just saying, ‘And here at our program we have this.’”
Journalism students write for and produce their own newspaper as well as their own weekly television and radio shows.
Veronique Mandal, coordinator of the journalism, public relations and media convergence programs, said the programs train students to become marketable when they enter the workforce.
“(The MediaPlex) is a converged journalism complex,” said Mandal. “Everything that a young reporter requires to go out as a converged journalist is available in this facility.”
Second year journalism student Rob Benneian said he remembers how overwhelming the information was when he attended his first open house at the MediaPlex.
“There’s a lot of equipment being thrown in your face,” said Benneian. “It’s a lot to process but I think for the most part everybody’s excited and eager and it’ll be a good crop next year.”
Benneian showed students and their parents around the newsroom, demonstrating how the editing software worked and answering questions about the program.
