The poppy — a flower that’s been associated with loss and remembrance — has been a symbol of the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for peace since 1921. The poppy symbol is specifically associated with the commonwealth nations.

The flower is worn to honor the fallen veterans of World War One and subsequent wars.

Eric Dyck, youth and education chairman of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 143, said the legion works to educate people about the poppy.

“After World War One there was such devastation in the areas around and the only thing that grew was the red poppies,” said Dyck. “It has been developed as the symbol of sacrifice for the soldiers of all ages, who were in war-torn areas.”

The legion has educational programs, including essay contests, to encourage understanding of the poppy.

Brandon Boldt, a social work student in Windsor, said his friendship with a veteran helped him understand the importance of the poppy.

“You need to attend a vigil and you put your poppy on the vigil to honor the veterans who lost their lives in the war,” said Boldt.

Services to honour veterans will be held at the cenotaph in City Hall Square in Windsor, and in other places in Essex County. For locations and information, visit the Royal Canadian Legion website.
