Basketball

The St. Clair College women’s basketball team have gone 3-1 in exhibition games since returning from the schools break. During the three wins the Saints outscored opponents 177- 153. Shannon Kennedy is leading the team with 41 points. The first regular season game of the year is on Jan. 13 in a home game against Mohawk College. The St. Clair men’s basketball team have played in only three games since their return to the court and have won two in exhibition play. They also start their season Jan. 13.   

 

The University of Windsor Lancers women’s basketball team had a tougher run since returning from their winter break, losing three games and winning only one. The Lancers have managed to keep the games close and are yet to lose by a margin of more than 12 points. The Lancers’ next game is Jan. 12 against the Waterloo Warriors. The Lancer men have been winless in three games since returning and also play Waterloo Jan. 12.

 

NHL

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators faced off in the NHL’s battle of Ontario on Jan. 10. Scoring opened up in the first period when Senators rookie defenceman Thomas Chabot’s shot bounced off Roman Polak and into the net. Ottawa scored three more goals in the game and won 4-3.

 

World Juniors

On Jan. 5, Team Canada won gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship. Canada played seven games in the tournament and won six with their loss coming at the outdoor game against the United States in a shootout. Canada faced Sweden in the finals and beat them 3-1 to win the gold.  Tyler Steenbergen from Red Deer, Alta. scored the winning goal of the game and Windsor Spitfires head coach Trevor Letowski brought home the gold for Team Canada.
