The final film based on the Twilight book series has been released and fans are debating if the series’ popularity has staying power.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 premiered Nov. 16 in theatres around North America, earning over $141 million at the box office, making it the eighth biggest opening weekend of all time. But with every book and film adaptation released, some fans are not sure if the vampire-themed series will last.

“It depends on the person,” said Robin Ross, a student studying theatre at the University of Windsor. “I know that I won’t go back to them very much. It’s always been a tradition with my friends to see the premiere and I haven’t watched the films aside from New Moon and Twilight aside from the premiere more than once. For me it’s more of a one time thing.”

Some book critics said they do not believe it will last because the general public is hard to judge.

“Unlike Lord of the Rings, which was written incredibly with a lot of research and skill, Twilight was written for mass popularity,” said Tara Murphy, publicity and marketing manager at Biblioasis.

Murphy said that it’s hard to predict how popular fiction will do because of “how fickle the reading public is.”

One moviegoer said she disagrees and although the movies are over, the movies are bringing people into the fandom.

“I know people too that haven’t read the series yet, but now that this movie’s coming out they’re starting it,” said Windsorite Chrissie Sharp. “So there’s people who are just going to keep starting it along the way.”

Another moviegoer said the series is going to continue because of how many people it can reach.

“I think it’s going to be a continuation in a sense because it is something that can span the generations,” said Stephanie Hartford. “People who are older, parents and grandparents, can understand the romance, the idea behind it and because it’s something so time and true, kind of like the Romeo and Juliet kind of idea, that they’re able to still connect.”

Whether you’re a Twilight fan who reads the books and views the films on a casual basis or enjoys the series with enthusiasm, Sharp says it’s not over because there are so many ways for people to continue to enjoy the series including Blu-Ray, audio books and the original hardcopy series itself.
