Uber comes to Windsor

Uber has made its entrance into Windsor’s transportation scene.

UberX began in Windsor Nov. 12, but has caused a lot of controversy since it opened up for business.  Uber is an American international transportation company that started in San Francisco, Calif.

Local Uber Driver Bhagwant Singh is a real estate agent and became a driver as a hobby. Singh is able to use his own car and manages his own schedule. Uber allows its drivers to be their own boss and work at their own time.

When Uber announced it was arriving in Windsor, local taxi drivers were concerned they would lose their jobs and their clients. Vets Cab Company has been in Windsor for many years and was started by war veterans.

“Great, somebody is coming to steal my job,” said Hassan El-Mokadem, a Vets cab driver for three years. Vets Cabs are concerned about Uber because there isn’t an office in Windsor where people can file complaints. “We care about this job and care about staying in this job.”

Windsor residents are very excited about the new Uber service. More than 10 million people around the world have downloaded the app. Uber app is known for its accessibility to use. Users must put in the location and the destination for the driver, the driver will use this information and if the ride needs to be cancelled the ride, you just hit the icon with the cancel button. Jarmina Weatherspoon co-owner of Spoontastic Treats, said Uber is a good idea for Windsor.

“It gives cab drivers a little bit of completion to secure in their position,” said Weatherspoon.  Weatherspoon said she is planning on trying the Uber app in Windsor.

Uber and Vets Cab Company apps are available on iPhone and Androids.
