While students attempt to balance work and school, obstacles arise while searching for jobs, according to a student at St. Clair College.

“I don’t have a job right now since I find it tough to acquire one because not many employers are willing to hire students,” said Laura Levocovici, a student in the college’s nursing program. “They want someone to work there 8-10 hours a day, but it’s challenging to do with your school.”

She said, she has seen, Windsor students opt to work in other cities because there are numerous disadvantages to local opportunities, even if there are openings.

“There is a lot of minimum wage, but they can’t work at minimum wage since education is expensive, and if they’re living on their own, they have rent to pay as well as for mobile services and transportation,” said Levocovici.

According to Levocovici, there are some authorities who can assist the students in some way.

“The government can increase wages and also improve jobs sectors around their school so they will also be able to work easily as per their school schedule,” said Levocovici. “Students should have some sort of access where they can get certain discounts on different things like groceries, rent, public transportation and free health service.”

St. Clair College has many initiatives to help students to find jobs.

“We help students with their resume and cover letter, we can also support with search strategies as well as interview preparation and some networking strategies as well,” said Erica Knight, Internship placement and co-op officer of the Career Services Department at St. Clair College.

Levcovici said it’s good that St. Clair College tries to help with the job hunt for students.

“We have a job posting portal called Career Central where jobs get posted for sometimes internal positions but mostly for external positions so we can help the students navigate that system as well,” said Knight.
