Unifor Local 195 president John Toth passes away
Windsor union leader John Toth died on Thursday at the age of 56 after a battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully on April 4, 2019 with his family by his side.
Toth’s service to his community started in 1982, when he served as Separate School Board Trustee with the Windsor Board of Education. He was later elected to the Windsor Roman Catholic Separate School Board and served as Trustee for six years. John was a member of the United Way Campaign Cabinet for five years, supporting programming to assist our most vulnerable communities.
Toth began his career at Fabco in 1986, serving 12 years on the negotiating committee and working there until it closed in 2010. His commitment to Local 195 and the Union movement started during his career at Fabco, and he served in various positions with the union local since 2001. Toth was a driver with Vets Taxi for four years, served as chair of the Local 195 Adjustment Program from 2006-2012, and served on the Board of Directors of Workplace Windsor-Essex from 2011-2017 including two years as vice-chair. Toth has also been a respected member of the Windsor District Labour Council for over 20 years.
Toth proudly served in various roles with Unifor Local 195 Executive Board for 17 years, three years as First Vice President and most recently, as President of Local 195.
His colleagues remember him as a good and intelligent leader, strong and compassionate in his work.
Visitation will be held at Windsor Chapel (Banwell Chapel) 11677 Tecumseh Rd East on Monday April 8, 2019 from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 from 10 a.m. until time of Chapel Service at 11 a.m. with cremation to follow.
