University of Windsor going smoke free
The University of Windsor is joining a list of 65 other colleges and universities in Canada to become 100 per cent smoke free.
Currently, the campus offers select smoking locations for cannabis, vaping and tobacco. But the locations will be removed in time for the fall semesters in September.
“I think they’re taking a good initiative, I know other universities around the province have been doing the same thing,” said Jamie Bonneau, a University of Windsor business student.
“I thought it was an interesting move when a lot of other schools went smoke free last year when marijuana was legalized, the University of Windsor allowed it to be smoked on campus. People don’t really want to smoke in public places like this, especially when there are so many young people around.”
While Bonneau notes the benefits for non-smokers walking around campus without having smoke in his face, some students believe there’s environmental impacts as well.
“It’ll be nice having nothing on the ground, right now there’s little cigarette butts everywhere,” said Morgan Pake, a third year University of Windsor student.
“Anything to help the environment is probably proactive. Whatever we can do as early as possible would be great.”
