New University of Windsor Campus to expand the downtown business scene

With the University of Windsor expanding their campus, downtown business is expected to increase drastically.

The university is following St. Clair College in bringing some of their programs downtown. The College has two buildings downtown, St. Clair Centre for the Arts on Riverside Drive, and The MediaPlex on Victoria Avenue.

St. Clair has 11 programs at their downtown campus. Some of these programs include, advertising & marketing, travel & tourism and graphic design. The university has programs downtown include, new art and creative innovation, social work and executive and professional education. The new university campus will increase the number of students who attend school downtown.

Having these campuses will bring in business downtown, during the day and after school hours from students and friends of students.

“Students absolutely come here all times of the day and night,” said Briana Benore an employee of Milk Café on University Avenue. “College students come down here and frequently filtrate through the local businesses.”

“I think that the students add to the community, culture, and absolutely help business,” said Benore. Benore thinks that the University making their way downtown will really help businesses.

The move of building a campus downtown will have a positive effect on the community.

“It’s the youth that creates the future for the people of tomorrow,” said Benore. “I believe so many more businesses will open up. People will start coming down and businesses will start flourishing.”

Students come downtown after school hours because of different business they see because of school. “The students are out on their way to school and they see a really cool hot spot, they will want to go there and meet up to do homework and socialize,” said Benore. “I think it is important that they see things that are open and up because then it draws them in.”

Divya Patel an employee of Subway on Ouellette Avenue says she thinks the new University campus will bring in more business as well. Patel says her friends always tell her about new businesses downtown.

“With campuses downtown, there will be more students going to and from classes so you got people who are bound to stop by any places for a bite to eat,” said Thai Giang a St. Clair student studying travel & tourism at the downtown Centre for the Arts Building. “Should bring even more students to the local downtown core area and expose them to the nearby small businesses and restaurants.”
