Spring is almost here and a group of University of Windsor students have come up with a solution to a problem we didn’t even know we had. Secara of Aviot industries has designed an eco-friendly lawnmower. Lightweight, virtually silent, maintenance free, safe and efficient. Secara is 1/3rd of the weigh of any traditional lawnmower.

“For the batteries we have used lead acid batteries which are easily chargeable and easily available in any store. For the cutting mechanism we have used dual blade design which moves in opposite directions this helps in the counter balancing, reduces noise and vibrations.” Designer Zain Shaikh describes Secara. “For the handle we went with a telescopic handle.”

The concept was designed using the University of Windsor – Odette School of Business facilities as well as utilizing the 3-D printer at the St. Clair College Main Campus.

“Secara has a 65% reduction in emissions. Current lawnmowers have no regulation on the emissions that are emitted because they are a very small internal combustion engine. And because of this there are massive effects in the greenhouse gases emissions throughout the world.” Co-founder Nigel Christian explains why this innovation is so important to our current environment. “Six per cent of United States greenhouse gas emissions are the result of lawnmowers.”

Aviot industries also markets a reusable silicone straw. To become marketable Secara has to undergo rigorous research and development testing. Although Secara plans to launch within the year although, no date has been selected yet. More information can be found be on their website, www.aviot.ca and selecting the Secara tab.
