The annual tradition of Mardi Gras, meaning “Fat Tuesday” had its original origin in 1699. It is the celebration before the period of the fasting season of Lent. It is the practice of consuming rich foods and using up ingredients that may be restricted during the Lent fasting including -but not limited to- butter, oil, sugar and eggs.
Blak’s Bakery has been operating in Windsor since 1918 on the corner of Langlois and Erie St. This year they expect to produce and sell 35,000 Pączki. But as the times change has the recent influx of vegan lifestyle and chance in health choices impacted Pączki day sales? Valarie Blak-Gill owner of Blak’s Bakery says… fat chance
“Not for us our business actually gets busier and busier for Pączki day because, there are so many people that take it as a once a year treat.” explained Blak-Gill.
But why is it important to be inclusive on this holiday?
Plant Joy, which was opened by Jordynne Ropat two years ago in Pillette Village, makes vegan doughnuts using high-quality organic and fair-trade ingredients.
“I think it’s really important for vegans to have the opportunity to participate in something that’s such a fun Windsor tradition and I’m really just proud and honored to be able to offer an option to local vegans.” said Ropat.
According to windsorite.ca Pączki day is mostly celebrated in Buffalo, Toledo, Cleveland, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, South Bend, and Windsor, Pączki Day is celebrated on Fat Tuesday. The Pączki Day celebrations in some areas are even larger than many celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day.
