A teen art show was held at Walkerville Artist’s co-op on Saturday, Feb. 18 to encourage young artists to pursue a creative career.

Theresa Tremblay, coordinator of the teen art show and member of Walkerville Artist’s co-op, hopes to see more students entering the event as the years go on.

“This is our fifth annual show,” said Tremblay. “This is twice as much art as we had last year and I am really enthusiastic about the young people, especially their art. Some of it is fantastic.”

Tremblay also hopes the show will encourage other young creative minds to take chances on themselves and their works.

“I want them not to be afraid for one thing,” said Tremblay. “I really would like them to understand what it is to have art hanging in the gallery.”

Viewers of the gallery were able to not just admire the art, but to select their favourite for the People’s Choice award.

First prize of the art show consists of art supplies and a 5ft wall space where they can place any of their works for a month. Those who placed second and third received art supplies as well.

Heather Georgiou, a local artist and member of the Walkerville Artist’s co-op and one of approximately 32 artists who display their work at the shop, hopes residents throughout Windsor take notice of the art show.

“I’d like to see that the art is really recognized in the city,”  said Georgiou. “There’s so many people that have so much talent that is unbelievable. People to be able to shine in their element because in a lot of cases it is not the case, because Windsor is such an automotive town.”

Georgiou’s advice to young artists is to stick with it.

“I would tell them to stay the course and especially the ones that are little farther in age and that they’ve done a number of pieces over the years,” said Georgiou. “There are so many different options for them. If it’s not a career choice for them, they should do it in their spare time for pleasure and enjoyment because it’s so important to have art in your life.”

The show went from Feb. 12 to Feb 16. Winners have yet to be announced.
