Flyers get defensive honours

 

It was announced two Leamington Flyers have earned defensive honours for the month of September from the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

 

Flyers captain Jake McGhee, 20, was awarded Western Conference defensive player of the month while Tyler Wall, 17, earned conference goaltender of the month honours.  

 

McGhee has tallied three goals and an assist in seven contests during the month. While Wall won all three of his starts and posted a 1.67 goals against average and earned a .941 save percentage.

 

Vipers tie Legionnaires

 

The Vipers played to a 1-1 tie against the visiting Sarnia Legionnaires at the Vollmer Centre Wednesday.

 

Tyler Russell had the lone Vipers tally while goalie Eli Billing made 30 saves through regulation and the two overtime periods. LaSalle will travel to play Lambton Shores Saturday with the puck dropping at 7 p.m.

 

73’s swamp Lakers

 

The Essex 73’s improved their record on the year to 9-1-0 Wednesday night with a 8-1 victory over the last place Wallaceburg Lakers.

 

Lakers goalie Alex Carriere faced 64 shots in the game while Essex’s William Stadder and AP Brandon Flood each had three points on the night.

 

University hockey opening faceoff

 

The Windsor Lancers opened their season with a 5-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons at South Windsor Arena Wednesday night.

 

The Lancers host the Waterloo Warriors Saturday night at the South Windsor Arena with the puck dropping at 7:30 p.m.

 

High school basketball

 

Leamington beat Marantha 23-19 in Tier 2 girls basketball Wednesday. Danielle Slingerland had 18 points for Leamington.

 

Oliva Toews had 13 points for UMEI in their 30-26 win over St. Cecile

 

Tier 1 action saw Essex down Kennedy 48-33. Kim Orton and Lucia McElwain each had 18 points for the Red Raiders.

 

Carleigh Labelle had 22 points in Herman’s 53-49 win over Lajeunesse, Sydney Reaume had a 10 point effort for Sandwich in their 38-23 victory over Assumption while Belle River’s Madison

Finnerty and Abby Cham scored 15 points each to help propel the Nobles over Walkerville 36-14.

 

Saints soccer

 

In Ontario College Athletics Association men’s soccer action, the Saints dropped a 3-2 decision to the Fanshawe Falcons in London on Wednesday.

 

Martin Nyul and Stefan Milidrag each scored for the Saints who are ranked fourth in Ontario with their 4-2-1 record. St. Clair will head to Sarnia to face the Lambton Lions next Wednesday.
