Who likes musicals the way I love them?
I was maybe 5 years old when I saw the movie where people were not just sharing with us some story but during it, they also were singing and dancing.
For me the first movie of this kind was an Indian movie. “Disco Dancer” (1982). It’s about a young man who has a dream of becoming a famous singer and actor but behind his dreams actually was a revenge intention for his mother who was falsely charged and ended up in prison.
Another spectacular musical movie is “The King and I” (1956). It is about a widow and her son who crossed the world to be a tutor for many of the kings of Siam. Nowadays it is a very popular story when native English-speaking citizens move to China to do the same job but in professional institutions. Of course, this movie is full of emotions, beautiful props, and lovely songs, and makes you fall in love with the story.
The next one that took my heart was “My Fair Lady “ (1964). After this you can also watch “Funny Face“(1957). Sure, adorable Audrey Hepburn and the love stories that just envelop you into every movie and make you part of this story. I am very upset understanding that this generation of 2000s even doesn’t know who she is, but from another side, I realize that she was and still is an icon. This fact makes me feel better because many of the new actors have implemented her gestures and manner of acting. “My Fairy Lady” is a remake of Bernard Shaw’s play “Pygmalion”. And the second movie is a fairy tale about a librarian girl who becomes a fashion model.
The next iconic musical movie of course is with Julia Andrews “Sound of the Music” (1965) and “Mary Poppins” (1964). There is no sense in telling about the second one, this story is old as a time, and the first movie is about an emotionally lost girl. It shows Austria in WWl , and a lovely rebellious girl being a nun. The mother superior from the convent sees for her a different life path, and on the way comes a widowed military man with a flock of kids who need discipline, love, and understanding, so she gets into this family and of course, everything ends up with a new family created.
There are many new adorable musicals, like “Moulin Rouge”, “Mamma Mia”, “Chicago”, “Les Misérables”, and “The Greatest Showman.” Disney is working yearly on new movies like a factory. Everyone is so talented who is doing the dancing and singing altogether. I understand one thing, it’s very important to find one person in life who also can watch this kind of movie with you, and this is my husband, I can tell you I’m lucky. Our St Clair College has a Musical Theatre Program, so it is never too late to find your new path in life, who knows maybe you will be the next star of Broadway.
