The Windsor Goodfellows’ newspaper drive has exceeded its fundraising goal for the 2017 season.

The group had hoped to raise $275,000. As of Monday afternoon they had reached over $287,000.

The annual newspaper drive was started in 1914 by two of the club’s earliest members. They began the tradition of publishing and selling a special newspaper to raise money to provide Christmas dinner and other necessities for those less fortunate. The first year’s sales totalled a little over $400.

Goodfellows vice president Gil Barichello said he’s delighted with the donations, especially because so many residents were hit hard during the basement flooding in the fall.

The money will support the 6,000 boxes of food and treats that Goodfellows distribute directly to the needy as well as to a local food bank and nine school breakfast programs.

Last year, a record amount of at least $296,699 was raised. Organizers are hoping to beat that total this year.
