Windsor man charged with manslaughter
A Windsor man could be facing 25 years to life in prison after a jury convicted him Thursday of manslaughter.
Dia Eddin Hanan was on trial following the death of Aleksji Guzhavin and the attempted murder and shooting of Gregory Henriquez, an American who was living in Windsor at the time. The shooting left Henriquez paralyzed.
The jury of 10 women and two men found Hanan not guilty of second degree murder in the double shooting that happened December of 2015. They heard deliberations which began Wednesday and carried into Thursday before Superior Court Justice Kirk Munroe delivered the verdict.
Hanan argued that he shot the two men in the backyard of his Oak Street home in self-defence in fear of his life. He said he felt he was being shaken down for money and they were unsatisfied with his offer of $300 he had made in the driveway. Hanan testified he began shooting in the dark after he wrestled the gun free from Guzhabin.
Using a firearm with the intent to wound means the minimum sentence Hanan is facing is five years in prison.
