Windsor man retains MMA featherweight title
A local fighter is gaining ground in the MMA octagon.
T.J. Laramie is a 20-year-old defending TKO featherweight champ who beat opponent Joao Nogueira on March 16.
He defeated Nogueira in Place Bell in Laval, Que. with a TKO in round five. The fight was broadcasted live on the Fight Network and was the main event of the night.
Brandon Bailey has been an avid supporter of the fighter and said he is proud of Laramie for being a local man but also because his own son looks up to him.
“The passion he puts into it is everything to him,” said Bailey. “The reason he is at the level he is, is because level of dedication he has. He has a level of dedication unlike anyone else I’ve seen.”
Laramie retained his featherweight title and said he is looking at one more title defence before a bigger organization comes calling like the UFC.
“It’s pretty awesome to have my dreams coming true at such a young age,” said Laramie. “All the hard work is finally paying off.”
He said he had two long training camps for the last two title fights, along with some injuries in the last fight that he wants to heal from before he goes back into the gym.
Laramie’s next title fight is tentatively in June.
