Windsor police officer awarded for lifesaving efforts

Const. David Drummond was recognized Thursday along with eight other officers for lifesaving efforts.

The Windsor Police Services Board honoured officers with St. John Ambulance Lifesaving Awards. Drummond’s award was of gold level, and the eight others were given silver level for other unspecified incidents.

The award for Drummond was for risking his own life to help another person on Sept. 30, 2018. He was on patrol in the downtown area on Wyandotte Street, when he approached a brawl outside of a bar. After pulling over and exiting his vehicle, a 23-year-old approached Drummond for help with multiple stab wounds in his back. Drummond laid the victim down and applied pressure to his wounds until other officers and paramedics arrived on scene to help.

Drummond has been serving the public as a police officer in Windsor for 17 years.

The St. John Ambulance Award has been given out for over 30 years to acknowledge the administration of first aid skills by individuals or groups of individuals while saving or attempting to save a life. The nominees for this award do not need to have been trained by or be a member of St. John Ambulance.
