Windsor Police thwart credit card scam
A woman and three men have been arrested and charged with theft under $5,000.
They are accused of embedding stolen credit card data onto gift cards used to purchase goods.
A tip from an employee at the Real Canadian Superstore on Walker Road alerted police Wednesday. “He thought, ‘Something’s not right here. I’m going to take a closer look,’ ” said Cst. Rob Durling.
On display at a Friday noon-hour press conference were dozens of gift cards, fixed-amount pre-paid credit cards, a laptop and card reader police say were used by the accused. “You’ve basically turned a gift card, with say a denomination of $50 or $100, now you’ve upped the limit to $5,000 or $10,000 — whatever the [credit] limit on the [stolen] card,” said Durling.
An embossing machine, used to make gift cards look like credit cards, was also displayed. The items were recovered from a local hotel room.
The four remain in custody pending further charges in the ongoing investigation of the financial crimes unit.
