Windsor Sikh community celebrates Diwali
Windsor’s Sikh community came together in a celebration of light to mark Diwali at the Gurdwara Khalsa Prakash Temple in Windsor.
Sikhs prayed and ate together and played with Gatka fighting sticks before fireworks lit up the night sky. They lit candles and lamps and prayed for good health.
Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is as important to Indians as Christmas is to Christians, said Harjinder Singh, president of Gurdwara Khalsa Prakash Temple.
“Approximately five thousand Indian students and families were present in Gurdwara to celebrate the festival,” said Singh.
University of Windsor student Karan Veer said Diwali was an important festival that brought community members together.
“We worshiped here and we enjoyed fireworks and spent time together,” said Veer.
