Windsor Strives To Improve Active Transportation

Windsor, a city built for cars, is trying to develop other forms of transportation.

Walk Wheel Windsor is an 18-month program launched earlier this year dedicated to improving active transportation which includes biking, walking and public transit.

“I think there is an overall shift in people becoming a little friendlier toward the environment, so people need more transportation options besides automobiles,” said Dwane Dawson, executive director of operations for the city of Windsor. “Some of those options have to include active transportation and transit systems. We need to make sure all the opportunities are accounted for.”

The Walk Wheel Windsor team hosted a community roadshow at the Windsor International Aquatic Centre on Monday, where Windsorites were invited to voice their suggestions on how to improve active transportation.

The goal for Walk Wheel Windsor is to have 25 per cent of all commuting be by walking, cycling and public transit by 2048.

“I think it’s a good idea,” said Windsor resident Ross Smith. “But I think there needs to be a faster timeline.”

Although there are no more community roadshows scheduled this fall, you can help improve Windsor’s active transportation by taking the Walk Wheel Windsor online  survey at walkwheelwindsor.metroquest.ca
