Windsor unemployment rises further above national average

Windsor has seen a 0.5 per cent increase in unemployment, reaching 6.7 per cent in October according to Statistics Canada’s October report.

Nationally, Canada’s unemployment rate held steady at 5.5 per cent. After two consecutive months of growth, the economy lost 1,800 jobs. The total number of full-time jobs lost was 16,100, with 14,300 part-time jobs gained.

June Muir, CEO of Windsor Unemployment Resources said that compared to October last year, they’ve seen an increase of 20 per cent for people using their programs to find work. This is a significant increase in comparison to relative unemployment increasing by 8 per cent.

The losses were mostly in manufacturing and construction, losing 23,000 and 21,000 jobs respectively. However, there was an increase of 20,000 in public administration and 18,000 in finance, leasing, rental, real estate and insurance.

Overall, Canada’s employment is up 443,000 jobs compared to last year, an increase of 2.4 per cent.
