The Windsor Youth Centre is considered more than just a community centre – it has become a second home for many young people in the community.

When the centre was opened in October 2011, no one knew it would have such an impact.

“A lot of people wouldn’t have a place to call a home for themselves if it wasn’t for the centre,” said Panos Georgia, who has been going to the WYC for the past year. “A lot of people don’t have families or people to go home to so this provides this for them.”

Since opening three years ago, the Windsor Community Centre has seen 22-80 youth per day. With four staff members, 20-40 volunteers and an open door policy, the WYC try their best to help struggling youth (16-25 years old) in the community. They provide them with a hot meal, snacks, socialization, activities and the opportunity to be around others who are maybe facing the same struggles.

“It’s very beneficial,” said Jessie O’Conner, who has been a staff member for the past year. “They’re very appreciative for the support and providing the necessities for them.”

The WYC also provides job postings, tutoring, resume reviews and even going as far as providing transportation for those who need it to get to interviews and appointments.

O’Conner had nothing but encouraging words to say about her personal experience while working with the WYC.

“It grabs a hold of you,” she said “It opens your eyes to the struggle, the reality, and being an adult without support. It allows me to help and that’s what I want to do. It keeps them out of trouble. It’s a warm and safe environment for them to seek help.”

Although a popular spot, the space is very limited. It was recently announced that the centre would be
relocating in 2015 to accommodate more youth and to provide a more comfortable environment. The WYC is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, but it will take a lot of fundraising, donations and events to raise money for a down payment at a building.

“It’s the only place I go to,” said Panos “I don’t really like going out. This place has a good atmosphere. I have nothing but respect for this place and I could never disrespect it.”

The Windsor Youth Centre is located at 1321 Wyandotte St East. It is open from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
