Years of Cheer
North Star Cheer is Windsor’s only cheer team, open since 2006.
Owned and coach by Cheri McCurdy-Ducre and Linda McCurdy, they not only teach cheerleading but also teamwork and dedication, according to their website.
Even the name has a story.
“I considered a number of options, but North Star represents the north star that the fugitive slaves followed to Canada on the underground railroad. Since my family came here on the underground railroad, I figured it would be an appropriate name,” said McCurdy-Ducre.
The team features an open team that consists of people aged 16 and older. This is to accommodate for cheerleaders who have grown out of competitions and who want to get back into the sport.
Molly Vaillancourt, now in her teens, was on the team at 10 years old and returned years later. She said they worked together as a team even for fundraising
“We actually made scrunchies ourselves, so we hand made them and learned how to sew. We will be selling them for one for $5 or two for $8.” said Vaillancourt.
