The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario honoured acts of peace at a breakfast event Wednesday morning.  They awarded a Peace Medal to recognize individuals, groups and youth who have demonstrated a commitment to building peace within their community or communities elsewhere in the world.

Andrew Loki is the chief executive officer for YMCA of Southwestern Ontario.

“Peace is such an important element of how human beings can be happy and productive in their environment,” said Loki. “The absence of peace can be very difficult on families, their mental and physical health. I can speak for the YMCA southwestern Ontario when I say we’re delighted to have the chance to celebrate people working towards these healthy communities.”

In Windsor, the winners were:

Ava Pitre: Ava was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 2. Since then she’s been collecting money for the treatment of people who are epileptic.

Catholic Central High School: CCHS has been helping newcomers adjust to life in Canada with English classes.

Westview Freedom Academy Secondary School: Working on youth programs to help settle newcomers .

The breakfast and awards are celebrated nationwide.  YMCA is a charitable association providing quality service to the community through the spiritual, mental and physical development of all.
