A quick look at the PlayStation 5 launch

The new PlayStation 5 was released by Sony this past Thursday, on Nov. 12 and sold out that same day.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, said in an interview with Naver (via Gamesindustry.biz) that he expects the PS5 to “sell more in its first fiscal year than [we] sold in the first fiscal year at the time of [the] PS4 launch.”

Most reports show that the PS4 sold about 7 million units during its first year, with roughly 2.1 million of those sales coming during the console’s first two weeks on the market, and it has also been reported that Sony intended to make 5 to 6 million PS5s during the console’s first two quarters. However, the company later suggested that they may double that number and stated that they will stick to it even during the pandemic.

Judging by the fact that Japan, with a lottery-based pre-order system for the PS5, managed to sell out BEFORE launch, and that the majority of retailers across the globe sold out of the console on launch day, it seems that this prediction from Ryan just might come true.

There sadly aren’t any sales reports from Sony about their launch sales, but we can infer that the company has already sold a respectable number of units.

Now on to reviews!

So far reviews have been pretty positive, with many critics applauding the improvements to the cooling system, which was a major worry for some users, as the PS4 can be rather noisy when running a-level games.

Pushsqaure’s Sammy Baker praised the PS5’s loading speeds, stating that it’s the most powerful PlayStation console Sony ever created, with a data transfer speed of 8-9GB per second, a massive increase compared to the PlayStation 4’s 50-100MB per second, and that its lightning-fast SSD (Solid State Drive) is the main star of the show.

In short, Sony seems to have done it again with another amazing console, and it’s selling like crazy… Critics seem to love it and so do consumers.
