A Windsor bakery is busy preparing for their opening day by donating bread to Windsorites in need.
Cobs Bread has donated about $5,000 worth of baked goods for every day they have trained their bakers. In preparation for their grand opening, the bakers have been taught to make signature bread products. However, since they could not yet open their doors to customers, owner Sandra Janzen gave away everything made to local businesses and passers-by. Anything left over at the end of the day Janzen then donated to the Unemployed Help Centre.
“The community benefits from our support as well,” said Janzen. “We are working with the Unemployed Help Centre here in Windsor as our partner, so they are going to be coming to us every day and picking up bread that was left over and distributing it to the people who need it.”
The bakery franchise originated in Australia, where Cobs Bread is well-known for their charitable contributions. This was an important part of the decision to change careers for the owners, as charity has always been important to them.
Co-owner and husband David Janzen said he also felt drawn to the franchise, though he still maintains a career in entertainment production between Nashville and Windsor. Originally from the Windsor area, they decided to make the move back to Rose City.
“I am originally from Leamington, born and raised,” said David Janzen. “We thought it was a good time to come back and rejoin the community. We liked Cobs as an opportunity because of the engagement with the community. We could really get into a product that we could support.”
Cobs Bread is opening their doors at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Although they cannot currently produce gluten-free loaves, they do produce high-fibre, low-carb bread for people who are watching their calories.
