Influx of Trash around Windsor
Whether it’s in the alleyways, on the roads or in parks, there’s been an increase in the amount of litter scattered around town.
According to NCBI.gov, COVID-19 and the resulting lockdown has caused amounts of urban pollution to decrease. This effect wasn’t permanent, however. When the lockdown was lifted, large quantities of pollution appeared once again.
The main material that ends up in our parks and streets is plastic, with only 9 per cent recycled of 3 million tons discarded, according to Canada.ca.
Along with citizens, the municipal government has been noticing the increase of litter around the city as well. On Sept. 2, Windsor City Council voted unanimously for the garbage pick-up schedule to be changed to biweekly.
Chantal Beauchesne, 47, is a Windsorite who sees local pollution every day.
“It’s really unfortunate, we do have a lot of garbage around town,” said Beauchesne. “I see it often when I’m out on my daily eBike rides. It’s hard to say what can be done about it. I suppose we can educate, raise people better, pay people to clean up […]”
